The Ontogeny of Behavior

چکیده
ETHOLOGY ORIGINATED with Konrad Lorenz's work in the 1930s, but did not have widespread impact until the early 1950s, and then mainly through the writings of N. Tinbergen, a student and collaborator of Lorenz's. In Tinbergen's The Study of Instinct (1951), ethology was revealed as a new, widely ranging theory of behavior, the cornerstone of which was the assertion, forcefully supported with evidence, that much of an animal's behavior is instinctive, innate, inherited. That proposition was in marked opposition to the then-prevalent view among American animal psychologists that most, if not all, adaptive behavior was acquired through conditioning. This difference led to a renewal of the hoary controversy of nature versus nurture. Much of that controversy seems to have been based on semantic misunderstandings (Lehrman, 1970); therefore a review is unnecessary. It must be emphasized, however, that the original ethological standpoint on the issue has undergone considera ble modification and differentiation since The Study oJ Instinct was published, as have most other early

The effect of food type on phenotypic plasticity of sword tail, Xiphophurus helleri, during early ontogeny
Phenotypic plasticity is an important mechanism of phenotypic adaptation in response to environmental conditions. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of food type on the body shape of swordtail, Xiphoohurus helleri, during early development using geometric morphometric method. For this purpose, two treatments including feed by Artemia naupli and commercial Biomar diet were used i...
متن کاملChanges of digestive enzymes activity in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) during larval ontogeny
This study was aimed to gain knowledge on the ontogeny of digestive enzymes in common carp larvae at the governmental Warm water Fish Aquaculture Center of Shahid Rajaee in Sari, Mazandaran, Iran. The ontogenetic development of pancreatic (trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase and α-amylase) and intestinal (alkaline phosphatase and aminopeptidase-N) enzymes were assessed in common carp larvae from firs...
متن کاملOntogeny of the eye of Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) from prehatch to final larval stage
The present study examines the developmental stages of the eye retina in Caspian kutum during the pre-hatch stage to end of the larval stage. Fertilized eggs of Caspian kutum were obtained from Shahid Ansari Center for Reproduction of teleost fish (Guilan province, Iran). Sampling was done for one month until the larval stage completed and the yolk sac completely depleted. Samples were studied ...
متن کاملMaternal Exposure to Silver Nanoparticles in Mice: Effects on Dams’ Reproductive Performance and Pups’ Neurobehavioral Ontogeny
Introduction: - Significant increase in usage of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products, has increased its exposures to human and animals. Although there are some reports regarding the effects of AgNPs on complex organisms, no report was found as to its effects on neurobehavioral ontogeny. Methods: To investigate the effects of maternal exposure to AgNPs on development of neu...
متن کاملOntogeny of respiration and feeding structures of skull in Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus (Bordin, 1897)
In the present study, the process of the skull development and calcification in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) was studied. Development of cartilage started after hatching around the head and notochord (10.6 mm, total length, TL) and the first calcification process occurred in dermopalatine and dentary bone jaw coincident with mixing feeding. The appearance of dermal skeletal on the body...
متن کاملOsteological development of the vertebral column, paired, dorsal and anal fins in Rutilus caspicus, Pravdin (1927) (Teleostei: Cyprinidae)
Study of the osteological development in fishes is important from fisheries, biology and aquaculture points of views. It can be used as an early bio-indicator of non-optimal rearing conditions. The Caspian roach, Rutilus caspicus is a native cyprinid fish of the Caspian Sea that its artificial propagation has fulfilled in hatcheries to recruit its natural stocks. Hence, this study was conducted...
